I generally choose coffee shops that are quiet - or at the times when the popular ones are quiet. Usually I can tune out any external noise, unless it's really annoying, and the change of scene is what I need. That and caffeine that I haven't had to prepare myself.

But I do agree with you. It is foolish to believe that a coffee shop is a good place to work.

Here's a question: why do people think coffee shops are a good place to get work done? I find it kind of silly that people expect others to be quiet... in a place of business where people meet to socialize.

I'm not knocking you guys, but it is silly to me, and I don't see any benefit from working in a coffee shop. Personally, give me my office, or a quiet computer lab any day.

Ugh.

I had another bad experience, today, at one of the Uni café's. This one was a (nerdy) guy who felt the need to a) play with his phone, ie, ringtones, and b) sing along.

And the coffee wasn't even that great, so it wasn't worth it.

I left.

I feel your pain. The other day we were in our local coffee haunt and a couple of late-teen boys came in (stomping to the upstairs seating so no one would miss their arrival) and then plopped down on a sofa seating area with their Nintendo DS units and played football games. Loudly. Their drinks were gone in no time but the cheers of both tiny electronic crowds and the boys themselves went on and on and on...

I would've liked to strangle them. It was totally quiet before they turned up and three or four tables of people (mine included) were trying to get work done on a variety of laptops and paperwork piles. Grrr.
