Theme Conversion (Benevolence)

I’ve converted another WordPress theme to work with Blogsome: check it out on legendtest.blogsome.com for the time being, until it goes live on the site it will belong on.

Search is Broken, again.

I know I fixed the Search box in my sidebar, but it’s broken again. I’ll work on fixing it. Do’h! Update: it isn’t broken, just not working how I’d like. It treats all entries as though they are surrounded by double-quotes, for example, searching for Connections Blogsome returns no hits, even though there are posts that have both of these words in them. Whoops! Searching for that will now bring up this post, since those two words now appear in that order. Swapping the order of those words and searching will not find any posts…unless I wrote Blgsme Cnnectins somewhere, with the * replaced by o… Update 2: Now it seems to work. I did put a request in on the forum - I wonder if they fixed it…that was quick!

Bizarre Blogsome Behaviour

I just posted an update on what I’ve done to to make Connections work on Blogsome. When I did so, it crapped out my stylesheet and layout. Just having the info in a post that is normally only in the template files caused WordPress Multi-User to wigg out. And I didn’t just have the text, it was all escaped and >’d (I think I just created a new term, >’d!!) I’ll have to just have the files hosted somewhere else, and linked to again, I guess. Update: It was actually the Smarty Tags that were wigging out, or more correctly, the CSS code that Smarty thought were Smarty Tags.

Connections Edits

Yay! I’ve fixed the Search function so it works. I hadn’t changed the action tag to read "{$Smarty.server.PHP_SELF}", which it needed to be in order to work. What I want to do now is make the previous and next page links not have the words previous post, and next post, just the title and the double-arrows. Also, the Latest Posts does not seem to be updating…I’ll try to fix this.

Connections Orange

I’m currently altering Connections (Blogsome) to be an orange motif, for the CSTA site. View what it looks like so far at CSTA.

Popular Post Bug

I have the following code to display my most popular posts in the sidebar: {popularposts} {if $pposts != ''}   <h2>Most Popular Posts</h2>     <ul>     {foreach from=$pposts key=key item=hits}       <li><nobr><a href="{get_permalink id=$hits.postID}" title="{$hits.title}">{$hits.title|truncate:25:"..."}</a>: {$key}</nobr></li>     {/foreach}     </ul> {/if} However, it doesn’t work: the links are all to the least recent of my recent posts the last post on the page. I’ll have to fix this. (Note: a fix is in the comments).

Connections Theme for Blogsome

Note: the best place to get the Template, as it looks now is: My Template Page. This is automatically updated. To set up Blogsome to use Connections as a theme requires some serious editing of the Connections theme files. Luckily for all of you, I’ve done this. What you do need to do first is download the actual theme from wherever you can find it. Try Vanilla Mist. Then, upload all of the images (making sure you change the top.jpg if you want, to whatever image you want there) using the Upload tab of your dashboard. Unfortunately, you cannot FTP to blogsome’s server, so you will need to upload each file seperately. Note: if you change the top image, make sure it is the same size. Leave the bar at the top there - that’s where the nav menu needs to go. I have added a couple of images: post_comment.png and search.png that also need to be uploaded. You then need to put all of the contents of the following files in the correct place using the Manage/Files tab of the dashboard: Main Page, Style Sheet, Posts, Comments. Depending on your browser, you may need to save these files - it might try to render them, and therefore make them rather useless. (I’m talking IE here!) Note: The most recent version is always available at Connections Template. That should just about do it. I would suggest you do some edits to make things a bit your own (maybe remove my AdSense code) but that’s up to you. If you cannot fix any errors, drop me a line or leave a comment here. Good Luck/Happy Editing Update: I’ve changed where the files are stored, and I’ve put the latest versions up there, so update away!

Connections Theme Edits Finished.

I’ve finished the edits I wanted and needed to make to Patricia Müller’s excellent (award winning) theme ‘Connections’. I had heaps of hassles with matching up

and
tags, and according to the XHTML Validator, I still haven’t got it completely right, but close enough for now! Also, (and young coders take note) Internet Explorer (Win) was not handling HTML comments the same way every other (read: real) browser does. Removing these comments, or uncommenting them, fixed the problem with pages not displaying blog comments and the sidebar. Finally, Netscape (Mac) doesn’t display the “rap” image, nor does IE Mac display any images.  If you are using either of these products, get Camino, Firefox, or just use Safari, dammit! Oh, and I wonder if anyone knows where the photo of me was taken!

Not Quite Right, Yet.

Okay, this site is nearly ready to be used.  I have dragged across the template from Vanilla Mist, and adjusted it so it kind-of works with blogsome.com The only hassles I have are:

  1. Ecto seems to mentally add Uncategorized to each post.  Regardless of if I uncheck it.*
  2. For some reason having more than two posts on a page results in the sidebar being left at the bottom of the page.  Not cool.
  3. I cannot just double-click on an entry in ecto and then choose the new blog-site, click Publish and go, as ecto changes the date of the edited post to now if you change blogs.
  4. Posts do not appear until GMT, or UTC or whatever, is the time at which I posted it.  The settings page does not work when I try to change the blog timezone.  (That’s why this page hasn’t appeared yet…)
    • okay, this might not be entirely ecto’s fault, as when it retrieves the post, it has the extra Uncategorized category. Fixed No. 2: I was missing a tag on the post.html page - and had an extra one on the index.html which was making it work with one or two posts.
