Blogsome Forums Revamp

I’ve started the revamp of the Blogsome forums. I’ve decided to clear out the FAQ section, and only have questions in there that have an answer, or cannot be answered. General users are not to post problems they have there, but rather to use it as a great place to find information. Anyone who wants to help out can read FAQ Reorganisation, and start the work!

iTunes/iPod Incomplete Podcast Listening

If I start listening to a Podcast, and stop, iTunes removes it from my iPod. Not Very Cool!

Tax Man Uses Special Computer for Bill Gates

Tax Man Uses Special Computer for Bill Gates - OSNews.com

Bill Gates has revealed that the US taxman cannot process his tax return on its standard computers. Speaking to a Microsoft conference in Lisbon, Bill said that his fortune was too large and pendulous for the tax office computers. Apparently they just run screaming when they see his bulky dossiers. The tax office have had to splash out on a special computer that can accomodate all those 00000000s without squealing like a pig.

Yeah, they use a special computer. It’s called a Macintosh.

Viewing Asides

I need to make it so that people can click a link and comment on Asides. At the moment, there is no visible way to view an Aside post page, other than if it appears in the Recent Posts list.

Podcast Listening

What is the verb for listening to Podcasts? Creating them is called Podcasting, but what about consuming them? Update: Apparently, this is called Podcatching. I do remember hearing this now, just not for a while.

ABC Podcasts

Dear ABC, As a new listener to Podcasts, I want to congratulate you on firstly the number, but also the quality of the programming you have put online. It is nice to be able to listen to programs I haven’t heard since I only had a car with an AM radio on Radio National, like the Science Show. Now that I commute on public transport, it’s also nice to be able to download programs that are transmitted in times when I am working, and listen to them as I travel. I understand that it’s a relatively new technology, but I do have some suggestions that would make, in my mind, your Podcasting service even better. Firstly, reduce the file size. Using other codecs, such as AAC, even in addition to MP3 would mean that the bitrate can be reduced, and I can more easily download more Podcasts over dialup. Secondly, I think the term Podcast is being used incorrectly in some contexts. You talk about listeners Pod_casting, when they are really Pod_catching - not that there is actually a word that is used in this context. The creator/distributor/broadcaster does the Pod_casting_, and listeners ‘catch’ that ‘cast. Perhaps a new word needs to be created to fill this void. Finally, I’d like to see a more comprehensive archive of Podcasts. As a public broadcaster, anything that does not have copyright restrictions elsewhere, like most of the music that is played on Classic FM, for instance, should be freely available to all Australians for eternity. The Internet is a great thing in this context. Regards, Matt.

iTunes and Podcasts

I won’t deny at times I am late to the party. I’ve just discovered listening to Podcasts - mainly ABC programs, as it turns out, but nonetheless, it’s a start. Anyway, being on dialup means it can take an age to download longer podcasts. And if iTunes decides it’s going to give up on a Podcast, it cannot just do a resume on the transfer. It must start all over again. Bad news, from where I’m listening.

iTunes Rater First Birthday

Apparently, today is iTunesRater’s first birthday. It was a year ago today that I first posted about the program I had created to rate tracks on a 0-100 scale. And it was only a couple of days ago that I realised most of the rating I’ve done has been a bit of a waste of time: iTunes seems to only take into account the actual star rating, not the real value. Except for tracks that are 1/2 star. I’m going to write a post on OmniNerd detailing my experiments and results, when I get a bit of time.
