Connections Theme for Blogsome

Note: the best place to get the Template, as it looks now is: My Template Page. This is automatically updated. To set up Blogsome to use Connections as a theme requires some serious editing of the Connections theme files. Luckily for all of you, I’ve done this. What you do need to do first is download the actual theme from wherever you can find it. Try Vanilla Mist. Then, upload all of the images (making sure you change the top.jpg if you want, to whatever image you want there) using the Upload tab of your dashboard. Unfortunately, you cannot FTP to blogsome’s server, so you will need to upload each file seperately. Note: if you change the top image, make sure it is the same size. Leave the bar at the top there - that’s where the nav menu needs to go. I have added a couple of images: post_comment.png and search.png that also need to be uploaded. You then need to put all of the contents of the following files in the correct place using the Manage/Files tab of the dashboard: Main Page, Style Sheet, Posts, Comments. Depending on your browser, you may need to save these files - it might try to render them, and therefore make them rather useless. (I’m talking IE here!) Note: The most recent version is always available at Connections Template. That should just about do it. I would suggest you do some edits to make things a bit your own (maybe remove my AdSense code) but that’s up to you. If you cannot fix any errors, drop me a line or leave a comment here. Good Luck/Happy Editing Update: I’ve changed where the files are stored, and I’ve put the latest versions up there, so update away!

Norwich 2: Man United 0

For all of those who haven’t seen the results, the Canaries defeated Man United this weekend, 2 nil. My pal Jo, who just left work for a while to go on a cruise mentioned something about Norwich needing to win the remainder of the games in order to prevent relegation. Looks like it could still happen!

Renovations

We’ve just taken possession of a new house, and are currently going through the process of renovating it. We are hoping to move in in about 3 weeks, but I know it won’t be completely finished then! Dsc00002-1 Dsc00041 Dsc00006

How to get that perfect shave

How to get that perfect shave - Today, Weekend Edition - MSNBC.com: I hate shaving, but since we have to, we might as well do it well.  This article really opened my eyes - I’m actually looking forward to shaving next week…

Connections Theme Edits Finished.

I’ve finished the edits I wanted and needed to make to Patricia Müller’s excellent (award winning) theme ‘Connections’. I had heaps of hassles with matching up <div> and </div> tags, and according to the XHTML Validator, I still haven’t got it completely right, but close enough for now! Also, (and young coders take note) Internet Explorer (Win) was not handling HTML comments the same way every other (read: real) browser does. Removing these comments, or uncommenting them, fixed the problem with pages not displaying blog comments and the sidebar. Finally, Netscape (Mac) doesn’t display the “rap” image, nor does IE Mac display any images.  If you are using either of these products, get Camino, Firefox, or just use Safari, dammit! Oh, and I wonder if anyone knows where the photo of me was taken!

Not Quite Right, Yet.

Okay, this site is nearly ready to be used.  I have dragged across the template from Vanilla Mist, and adjusted it so it kind-of works with blogsome.com The only hassles I have are:

  1. Ecto seems to mentally add Uncategorized to each post.  Regardless of if I uncheck it.*
  2. For some reason having more than two posts on a page results in the sidebar being left at the bottom of the page.  Not cool.
  3. I cannot just double-click on an entry in ecto and then choose the new blog-site, click Publish and go, as ecto changes the date of the edited post to now if you change blogs.
  4. Posts do not appear until GMT, or UTC or whatever, is the time at which I posted it.  The settings page does not work when I try to change the blog timezone.  (That’s why this page hasn’t appeared yet…)
    • okay, this might not be entirely ecto’s fault, as when it retrieves the post, it has the extra Uncategorized category. Fixed No. 2: I was missing a </div> tag on the post.html page - and had an extra one on the index.html which was making it work with one or two posts.

SITA School Recycling

I am all for recycling. Anyone who knows me knows I am (mostly) green. And I am a big supporter of anything that will increase the recycling done by our society. Schools are a great place to start - if we can have the younger people recycling automatically, then hopefully some, most or even all of them will continue do so. Perhaps some of them will influence their employer and they will be more open to recycling and reuse. So, in principle, I should support the competition that is run by SITA. But there is one thing that concerns me. The winning schools are those that collect the most recycling waste. Isn’t it likely that schools that already have policies in-place to reduce use will have less waste? So we are rewarding those schools that not only recycle, but use more in the first place. I’m not sure how it should be run, but I think someone needs to have a long hard think about this.

Hello world!

I thought I might transfer my blog to this site - since it uses WordPress, and that seems cool.  I just need to work out how to set up my template here, but that shouldn’t take too long.

Age in AppleScript

Someone on the AppleScript Studio Mailing List wanted to know how to get an age; here’s my take:

set birthday to date “Thursday, 1 April 1976 12:00:00 AM” set age to (year of (current date)) - (year of birthday) if month of (current date) < month of birthday then     set age to age - 1 else if month of (current date) = month of birthday then     if day of (current date) < day of birthday then         set age to age - 1     end if end if get age
